It is the first training of its kind for Butte County's Search and Rescue teams. Drill Coordinator John Maretti explained, "We normally have one or two very technical rescues and we spend a lot of time doing a lot of those. Today, we're doing a different type of scenario. A Katrina or disaster type scenario where there's multiple 30 people we'll be addressing at the same time."

About 20 Search and Rescue officials performed back to back helicopter rescue exercises in Cohasset, to experience the toughest of rescue missions. More than a dozen Cohasset residents participated in the drills by waiting in various locations such as ponds schools and roof tops. Action News reporter Audrey Asistio also played a stranded victim in the woods.
ue to recent budget cuts, search and rescue crews say they have lost half of their flight time, taking them longer to get to victims. Training has also gone from once every month to once every two months making these drills more important than ever. Maretti told Action News, "We're trying to get them a sense of urgency, doing things as quickly but as safely as they can, knowing that there's people we're going to have to leave behind."

But search and rescue crews are not the only ones who benefit from these exercises. Participating neighbors say they have also learned a lot. Cohasset resident Donna Hall said, "We know that if there is an emergency in the foothills that they are ready to do it and they've practiced to do it."
Butte County Search and Rescue teams perform about 100 rescues a year. This is the first time Butte County Search and Rescue teams performed exercise drills in Cohasset.
