The men and women who volunteer on the Butte County Search and Rescue Team give up their time to make the community safer, and don't ask for much. But now the organization is running low on funding, and needs donations from Butte County residents.
"Be prepared, think in advance, plan your route," Ed Stopper the Butte County Search & Rescue Team Captain said.
Butte County's Search & Rescue team has been prepping all of their winter equipment in anticipation of this weekend's big storm. They are offering some simple tips in hopes that they won't have to use any of it.
If you are planning a long trip, rescuers say you should make sure your car is running well. Make sure you know the route before you leave. Don't just rely on your GPS.
It was late at night when she was on the river, something Brett Eagan from the Butte County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team says is not a good idea. "Night time is just a bad time to go down the water. We wouldn't even launch our boats at night, particularly when the water level is a little lower."
Butte and Yuba Counties search and rescue crews and volunteers kept busy on Monday, looking for 41-year-old Loren Harvey Jr. He went missing Friday, October 15th. Butte County Search and Rescue Sgt. Anthony Borgman told Action News, "We're up somewhere in the near 3,000 foot elevation, an area where a lot of forest, a lot of trees, pretty rough terrain."
Steel beam supports being used to build an overpass above Highway 149, just west of Highway 70, collapsed at about 7:15 a.m. today, crushing a FedEx truck on the roadway beneath.
Miraculously, the driver, Robert Sylvester, 45, of Chico only suffered a sprained ankle and minor cuts, and has already been released from Enloe Medical Center.
A Chico man faces criminal charges following a huge rescue effort Wednesday night in Upper Bidwell Park. Rescuers say they found 44-year-old Eric Cooper just after 7 p.m. drunk and belligerent near the creek at Bear Hole near the diversion dam. They went searching for Cooper after his girlfriend reported him overdue from a walk with this three dogs.
A risky but successful day for the Butte Inter-Agency Rescue Group. The team consists of members from Butte County Sheriff Search and Rescue, Chico Fire, Butte County/ Cal- Fire, Oroville Fire and Paradise Fire. About 12 people met Saturday morning for their semi-annual "Helo Aquatic Rescue Training." "This is a great opportunity, something that is kind of unique to Butte County that we've been operating for almost ten years now and it's become a great resource for our rescue teams," Stopper stated.
It is the first training of its kind for Butte County's Search and Rescue teams. Drill Coordinator John Maretti explained, "We normally have one or two very technical rescues and we spend a lot of time doing a lot of those. Today, we're doing a different type of scenario. A Katrina or disaster type scenario where there's multiple 30 people we'll be addressing at the same time."
It was a happy ending for three adventurers who found themselves stranded in a cabin in the Feather River Canyon area. Action News was there when the trio returned to civilization.
On Tuesday it took only four hours for rescue workers to find them. John Simola and Deneen Miland are from Butte County's ridge area, and Al Salguero is from San Jose. They were stranded for four days in a cabin in the snow near Inskip.
